The Peacemaker Guide to Shower Valves, Flashing, Watch Glasses, and Stainless Steel Sink Care

If you're ordering shower valves, pipe fittings, or sink parts for a renovation, here's the short version: the cheapest component is almost never the cheapest part of the job. I've spent the last six years handling plumbing and hardware orders for contractors, and I've personally wasted about $4,800 on purchases that seemed smart at the time.

I'm the person who keeps the mistake checklist on my team. Not because I'm perfect—because I've made enough errors to know exactly where they hide. This post covers the three things I wish someone had told me before I started: how to spec a shower valve without getting burned, why a watch glass (yes, the little glass window in a pipe) deserves more respect, and how to clean a stainless steel sink without wrecking the finish. Plus a few words about the alternate dimensions people forget to check.

Shower Valves: The Price Is Not the Price

In 2017, I ordered 60 shower valves for a multifamily project. I compared unit prices across three suppliers, picked the cheapest, and forgot about it until the plumber called. The problem? The rough-in depth was half an inch too short for the wall assembly. Every single valve had to be installed with a custom spacer—$28 per unit plus an extra day of labor.

The $35 valve ended up costing $63. The $48 one I'd skipped would've been $48.

Since then, I calculate total cost before comparing any vendor quotes. TCO for a shower valve includes: the valve body, trim kit, rough-in depth, compatible cartridge, and the labor to install it. Oh, and the cost of the callback when it leaks in two years (more on that below).

One thing to check that nobody mentions: the alternate dimensions. Not parallel-universe stuff—I mean the non-standard sizes. 1/2" vs. 3/4" inlets, 4" vs. 8" centers, positive stop vs. no positive stop. A valve that fits the catalog might not fit your wall. Measure the rough-in, measure the handle throw, measure the depth behind the tile. Then order.

There's also the question of pressure-balancing vs. thermostatic. Pressure-balancing valves are cheaper and handle most residential jobs. Thermostatic valves keep the temperature steady when someone flushes a toilet. They cost more upfront, but if you're doing a rental property, the peace of mind (pun intended) is worth it. Actually, for hotels and family bathrooms, I'd pay the extra $80–120 every time. The callbacks you avoid are where the TCO math works.

Industry standard: ASSE 1016 / CSA B125.1 for pressure-balancing and thermostatic shower valves. If the valve doesn't carry that certification, don't put it in. I learned that when a non-certified valve delivered scaldingly hot water after a cold-water flush. (Not my mistake—my supplier's—but I was the one approving the order.)

Flashing: The Waterproofing That Actually Saves the Wall

When I mention flashing, some people assume I'm talking about the DC show. No, wait—I mean the metal or plastic sheets that keep water out of wall assemblies. Around shower valves, niches, and window openings, flashing is what prevents the water that seeps through the tile from rotting the studs.

It's not glamorous, and it's easy to skip because it's invisible when the job is done. But I've torn out enough moldy walls to tell you: flashing is cheaper than mold remediation.

For a shower valve, the seal between the escutcheon and the tile is technically a gasket, not flashing. The actual flashing goes behind the cement board, typically a liquid-applied membrane or a PVC/PE sheet. If you're installing a valve in an exterior wall—which I don't recommend—you need a pan flashing under it and kick-out flashing at the eave. (Should mention: valves on exterior walls are a bad idea in cold climates. Move the plumbing to an interior chase.)

When buying flashing, check the thickness. I ordered 6 mil poly once because it was $0.03/sq ft cheaper. The supplier sent something like 3 mil. It tore during installation. We caught it when the inspector failed us. That's $430 in material and a 2-day delay, all to save $9. TCO again.

Watch Glass: Small Window, Big Confusion

A watch glass in a pipeline is a small glass window that lets you see if fluid is flowing. The name comes from old chemist's watch glasses, but in plumbing it's a sight glass. I've had contractors order "watch glass" and get completely unrelated lab glassware. If you're buying for a pump discharge or a fuel line, make sure you're getting a pressure-rated sight glass, not a chemistry supply.

We learned this when a customer ordered twelve "watch glasses" for an industrial washing system. They received 12 borosilicate watch glasses—the kind you do experiments on. The pump line was 1.5" NPT. Nothing fit. That was a $520 mistake (plus the rush shipping to get the right parts).

Here's the thing: a proper pipeline sight glass is rated for pressure. Common ratings are 150 psi, 300 psi, and even ANSI 600. The glass itself is typically tempered with a PTFE or Buna-N gasket. The frame can be stainless steel or carbon steel. Don't buy the cheapest one without checking the wetted materials—especially if you're handling anything corrosive.

And before you ask: yes, there are alternate dimension options here too. Sight glasses come in flange ratings, thread sizes, and lengths. A 4" one might not fit where a 4.5" one was specified. Check the actual OAL (overall length) against the pipe gap. I've made this mistake. It's not fun. After I placed that rush order for the correct ones, I kept second-guessing. What if the supplier sent the wrong ones again? The three-day wait was brutal.

How to Clean a Stainless Steel Sink Without Regretting It

Stainless steel sinks are durable, but they're not indestructible. The #1 mistake is using an abrasive pad or bleach-based cleaner. That scratches the oxide layer and creates tiny rust spots. Instead:

  • Rinse the sink with hot water to loosen debris.
  • Sprinkle baking soda (or use a mild dish soap) over the surface.
  • Scrub gently with a soft sponge or nylon brush, following the grain (the brushed lines) not against it.
  • Rinse thoroughly and dry with a microfiber cloth to prevent water spots.
  • For hard water stains, use a 1:1 vinegar and water solution. Let it sit 5 minutes, then wipe. (If you used any chemical polish on a new sink, wait 24 hours before doing this.)

I'll admit, I used to tell people to use Bar Keeper's Friend, which contains oxalic acid. It works great, but I've learned it's too easy for a homeowner to leave it on too long and etch the finish. The baking soda method is safer for everyday. For stubborn stains, BKF is fine—just don't let it sit longer than a minute.

What I Still Get Wrong

The TCO approach is a framework, not a rulebook. There are times when a cheap part is the right choice—a temporary repair, a prototype, a non-critical application.
