The first problem is that a garage door doesn't have a single price. There are three common grades of steel door panels: 28-gauge, 26-gauge, and 24-gauge. The thicker the steel, the more resistant the panel is to denting and oil-canning. Similar panels can look almost identical on a spec sheet unless you know to look for the gauge. A 16-by-7-foot uninsulated steel door might retail around $500 to $800. The same size with double-layer construction, 24-gauge steel, and a 25,000-cycle spring can run over $1,500. Both are garage doors. You're not comparing apples to apples.

It's the same mistake as buying a pair of high top Converse and expecting them to perform like work boots. Both cover your feet. One is made for a lifestyle; the other is made for a job. A garage door is the second kind of product — it's structural equipment. You should choose it the same way you'd choose a roof or a window: by what it delivers over time, not how it looks on a showroom floor.

The Deeper Issue: What Are You Really Paying For?

When I first started in this industry, I thought the price difference between entry-level and premium doors was mostly branding. Four years of reviewing warranty claims and failed components changed my mind. Here's what the extra money actually buys you:

Steel Thickness
